Love (and Being a Wife)

I meant to post this the week of Valentine’s day and then I wanted it to be secret and sacred (only given to my husband on Valentine’s day, so I didn’t). In turn, that caused me to go a month without posting and threw me off my “blog-posting schedule.” I overthink everything!

I wanted to share my next label of “wife” in a different way. When we first got married Kyle would often tell me that marriage is something that sanctifies you. I think it is John Piper that says, “Marriage is the greatest anvil of sanctification in the world.” By sharing this poem I hope you are able to see how God changed my view of love and how marriage is really cool but also super hard. We need it. Kyle keeps me sane and drives me crazy. It’s one of the best and hardest things.

Love- 2/14/25

As a little girl I thought love was:

Love at first sight.

One person for everyone–

Gotta find your soulmate,

Destiny and ultimate fate.

As I grew older and people said:

“Love is choosing to love one person.”

I thought- that’s not very romantic.

I wanted butterflies

And to see sparks fly.

And then I met you and realized-

It can be both and better.

It can be easy and hard.

Love is…

Wanting to protect someone against pain and heartbreak,

While sometimes being the one to cause it.

Love is asking for forgiveness and realizing you are wrong more than right.

It is splitting chores and early mornings.

It is looking back and wondering how we’ve had 3 kids,

When we were just flirting on a beach in Thailand.

Love is knowing–while it’s crazy,

we’d never change holding their little hands.

Love is holding it together for each other,

Taking turns being up and down.

It’s closing drawers and making a million grocery runs.

It’s having grace when you drive halfway across town on the wrong date.

I could go on and on

There are so many ways you love me.

But all this to say-

this is better than what I thought it would be.
